GPC offers a range of programs for adults, ranging from small discussion and Bible study groups to weekend retreats, to presentations and classes from featured speakers. Details of upcoming events appear on this page.

You are invited and welcome to participate in these programs, whether or not you are already a part of the GPC community.

 

Join the Women’s Bible Study Group (Questers)

11949859492013939767open_bible_01_01_svg_thumbWomen of all ages are invited to join our Women’s Bible Study (Questers), which meets on the second Monday of each month, at 1030am in the Common Room.

This year’s study is called, “Who is Jesus?”

We will be asking that question each month through different “lenses”…the writers themselves of the Synoptic Gospel, plus Paul, Jews and Muslims as well as others. read more

BIBLE STUDY at HIGH SIERRA

You are invited to attend a weekly Bible Study with Rev. Graham Baird.  Every Wednesday at 12:00 noon at the High Sierra Bar and Grill (521 Firestone Road, Goleta).

You may be wondering why we are meeting for this Bible Study in a public restaurant, rather than the church. Graham explains: The answer is because – and there is no other way of saying it – the Bible just reads differently when you study it in public.read more

Should such encounters focus on “statements of belief”? Should they look for “common ground,” if there’s a risk of watering-down our differences instead of exploring them?read more

Teilhard de Chardin’s “The Human Phenomenon” in AdultEd Oct5 and 12

chalice_earthIn the Adult-Ed hour (11AM) on Sunday, Oct 5 and 12, Dr. Ernie Tamminga will present Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s “The Human Phenomenon.” Teilhard (1881-1955) was a Jesuit priest and paleontologist whose life was devoted to integrating his scientific knowledge with his Christian faith. Using 300 color slides, this presentation is an accessible introduction to Teilhard’s  exploration of our cosmic spiritual legacy, and his inspiring vision of the human future.read more

Book Review: “Good News About Injustice” by Gary A. Haugen

The author is president of the International Justice Mission in Washington, D.C. and has worked in all areas of the world wherever injustice reigns (state-sponsored religious persecution, racial violence, torture and genocide).  As a Christian, Haugen explains, by using concrete stories and examples, that God is in the business of using the unlikely to accomplish justice and mercy. read more

Book Review: “In Search of Stone” by M. Scott Peck, MD

Dr. Peck and his wife took a three week trip through Wales, England and Scotland searching for the ancient megalithic stones in the countryside. But as in Peck’s other books, he is able to take ordinary things in life and find meaning and mystery in them. He takes topics like parenthood, holiness, romance & art to name a few, and finds in the megalithic stones new ways of understanding life.read more

Book Review: “Mixed Blessings” by Barbara Brown Taylor

She was chosen as one of 12 best preachers of the English world by Baylor University in 1995. Several books of her sermons have been printed and “Mixed Blessings” is only one of them. One reviewer says, “Taylor has a gift, not only for the right words, but also for putting together the Biblical passages with appropriate examples for the people and the culture in which we live”.read more

“Being a Person of Faith in a World of Faiths”

This is not formally a GPC event — it’s sponsored by Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality, a 501c-3 of whose board of directors Ernie is a member.
